Plastics Are One of the Most Important Materials We Have

Consider all the materials that we make stuff out of and how important they are to us. If you ask the average person they will immediately think of steel, aluminum, glass and concrete, then they will think a bit and say Plastic.

Ah ha, Plastic indeed, yes plastic and they probably should have said that first you see. After all, as one gentleman recently told me plastic is invisible and we do not think much about it until one day we watch our mashed in bumper pop-back out and bingo, good as new. Plastic is a material that is quite often invisible. But it is so vitally important to everything we make.

He is right about the plastic being invisible, that is why I like those public relations commercials for the plastic industry, where everything in the room starts disappearing. Hilarious, but it sends out the right message so good for the American Plastics Association, I say; Excellent PR and point well taken too.

Something so simple as plastic, now think where would be without it? Can you even begin to imagine. I mean just look at that computer in front of you. Heck the whole thing is made out of plastic? How about that cell phone right there by you? Yet plastic too, consider you cannot really go anywhere without plastic.

Think of how much of your car is made of plastic? Your remote control for your TV, have the stuff in your kitchen and what about your recreational toys? Yep, look at all that plastic. Why it is simply everywhere. Now I do not work for the American Plastics Association and I am not even in that business, but I just would like you to take a moment and consider all this in 2006.

The Most Important Part of Your Home

The most important part of any house isn't the framework or design; it's the foundation. A foundation anchors the weight of walls and columns into the earth. They are designed to bear the entire load of the house. A poorly constructed foundation can spell disaster for a home. A foundation must be designed to bear the load of the home with limited settlement.

Settlement happens when soil compacts and decreases in volume when a load is placed upon it. There are two different kinds of settlement: total settlement and differential settlement. Differential settlement means that one side of the foundations settles more than the other side. Bearing capacity is also taken into account in foundation design in order to make sure that the foundation is not loaded beyond its capacity to withstand.

Most modern foundations are made from concrete, either reinforced concrete or pre-tensioned concrete. If a house is built with a basement, a concrete foundation may have leakage problems if it is not waterproofed properly. Many contractors will use some kind of waterproofing method to create a moisture seal on the concrete to prevent water leaking or seeping from the earth through the concrete and into the basement.

Waterproofing the concrete may involve several different methods including epoxy sealant or a crystalline. This method creates a catalytic reaction to seal the pores and cracks in the concrete. Crystalline waterproofing penetrates into the concrete to form a tight seal.

Because the foundation of the home is so important, it must be designed and installed by only trained professionals. This will ensure that the foundation lasts for years to come.
