Chelsea Street Bridge Tower Lift
Watch in HD for Best Quality!! On April 20th and 21st, 2010 JF White Contracting and Saugus Construction Company completed two HUGE lifts building the primary leg support structures of the north tower of the Chelsea Street Bridge in Chelsea, MA. Each pre-assembled column section weighed 424000 pounds (212 tons) and was 120 feet in height. The height at the top of the completed structure is 220 feet. Lifting duties were accomplished using Hallmore's Demag CC2800 600-ton lattice crane with a Superlift configuration accompanied by their Demag 600-ton mobile crane for column tripping. Steel erection performed by Saugus Construction with their crew assisted by Local 7 Ironworkers out of Boston, MA. Best Non-highway Bridge Cowinner - Seattle Sound Transit Tukwila Segment, Seattle, Wash.
This 4.2-mi-long precast concrete segmental bridge was designed to complete the 20-mi-long light-rail mass-transit system connecting the Boeing airfield to the City of Seattle Airport. This projects light-rail alignment faced significant technical challenges, including the minimization of disturbance to major crossing thoroughfares, a large rail yard, and environmentally sensitive waterways. Further complicating the project is the high seismic zone in which it is located. Additionally, this project created unique vibration concerns resulting from the light rail and structural interaction, which had to be minimized to maintain passenger comfort. Because of the unique constraints and contextually required long spans, a precast segmental concrete V-box bridge type was chosen. By using precast concrete, a reliable high-strength concrete could be used (6500 psi) and the dimensions of the box girder were streamlined, allowing for a lighter structure and reduced seismic loads. This resulted in significant cost savings. The choice to use precast segmental concrete V-box girders saved approximately 15% of the original construction cost and accelerated the original construction schedule by six months. For aesthetics, the use of precast concrete allowed for the development of the unique cross-sectional shape of the box girder and architecturally appealing column treatment on this highly visible project. Sunshine Skyway Bridge
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, spanning Florida's Tampa Bay, is the world's longest bridge with a cable-stayed main span, with a length of 29040 feet (exactly 5.5 miles or approximately 8.85 km). It is part of I-275 (SR 93) and US 19 (SR 55), connecting St. Petersburg in Pinellas County and Terra Ceia in Manatee County, Florida, passing through Hillsborough County waters. Construction of the current bridge began in 1982, and the completed bridge was dedicated on February 7, 1987. The new bridge cost $244 million to build, and was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987. It is constructed of steel and concrete. Twenty-one steel cables clad in nine-inch steel tubes along the center line of the bridge support the structure. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group, and built by the American Bridge Company. In November 2005, an act of Florida Legislature officially named the current bridge the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, after the Governor of Florida who presided over its design and most of its construction. According to sources, he was inspired to suggest the current design by a visit to France, where he saw a similar cable-stayed bridge. The original bridge was dedicated to state engineer William E Dean, as noted on a plaque displayed at the south rest area of the bridge. The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 in its special on the "Top 10 Bridges" in the World. The bridge is considered the "flag bridge" of Florida. One of the major problems with the ...
