These casings ran continuously up the entire WTC towers and both acted and looked like a "spine". The core of the WTC towers were the thickest and strongest sections of the towers. They were responsible for carrying the building load. The exterior walls did not carry the primary building load. The WTC core sections featured the most concentration of continuous building material (ie steel columns and concrete) and it is for this reason that the core of each tower ultimately became the "spire" of each tower after the nuclear detonation's pulverization wave ran up the towers.
