Shade by the Shores

Google SketchUp, Google Earth and Guggenheim Museum Shelter Competition Shelter design by Eliezer Alejandro My shelter is designed to receive the best quality of light at all time during the day. It is located on the south side of Isla de Mona Island, Puerto Rico. Mona Island is a natural reserve where scientists, ecologists and students visit to explore its ecosystems. This Island lacks potable water and utilities. The shelter imitates the form of the cliff that surrounds Isla de Mona. It has cross ventilation, maximizing the sea breeze. The habitable areas of the shelter are found under the roofing areas. The interior space is organized by two main columns. One forms an axis from north to south and the other forms an axis from east to west. Regarding material used, I have used concrete to create a hurricane wind resistance. Steel construction was used to create the columns and also to create the ceiling beams for the area designed as a study hall. The shelter was designed due to the Island necessities and to find advantages in the use of sunlight and sea breeze using an innovative design.
