Entry from: Oaxaca, Mexico Entry Title: "Villages east of Oaxaca City" Entry: "Another day we explored east from the city to the market of Tlacolula, the weavers of Teotitlan and the ruins of Mitla. There are several other villages and sites of interest along side roads into the mountains, the Sierra Madre del Sur. Tlacolula has the the oldest market is mesoamerica. Each Sunday artisans and farmers and crafters from the surrounding area arrive, almost at dawn, to set up their wares. Market day is not only a day for selling but an important social event. The market is hugh filled with all sorts of vegetables, mounds of peppers, wood carved bowls,pottery and many stalls of rugs and embroidered clothing. Here as in the San Cristobal market were live chickens, turkeys and ducks. The color of the Zapotec women's dress adds vibrance to the market. Arrive early to get a parking spot nearby and have time to leisurely stroll around as by noon the vendors are beginning to pack up and begin their journey home. The 16th century church here is well worth a visit. There are many Santos,(statues) of saints and martyrs along the walls and around the dome. Here there is a mix of Zapotec and Spanish as in other churches in the region. Further east after another delightful lunch at a road side resturant we turned off ...
