"Heatwave" Magistrasmith's photos about Rome, Italy

Magistrasmith's travel blog entry: "Today was a full day in the city......and the heat was brutal. All of Italy is experiencing a massive heat wave, and it's pretty bad; the heat index is close to 110. Granted we have days that hot in Charleston, but here most things are not air-conditioned so it's entirely different. In the US when it's 110 nobody is walking around outside.... Our day began with us meeting at 9am in the Piazza Navona to talk about it's origins. The Piazza gets its distinctive oblong shape from the fact that it was originally a stadium built by Domitian. The stadium was dedicated in 86 AD and was Rome's first permanent stadium for athletic contests (like foot races etc.). The Circus Maximus was used for chariot races and the Colosseum for gladiatorial combats, both different from the athletics held in this stadium. The stadium was necessary partly because Domitian instituted the "Capitoline Games" during his reign and so he needed a place for them. The modern Piazza retains the shape of the stadium and it is possible to see some of the remains at the north end underneath the modern buildings. From the Piazza Navona we walked over the Pantheon, always an impressive site. The dome of the Pantheon is still the largest, unreinforced concrete dome in the world.
