This is Riverside: Architecture #8, Mission Inn Rotunda

Mission Inn Hotel, Riverside, CA, USA. I begin my walk across one of the of the many roofs that cover the historic edifice -- the one with the reflecting pool -- and walk down the whole height of the charming spiral staircase of the Rotunda. Be careful that you don't take the handrails seriously as they are not up to code and remain up only for historical preservation reasons. The prominent sign says so, as seen in the movie. The walls that give structural integrity to the rotunda as well as hold up the stairs, have many unique coats of arms embedded into the concrete at every column. The coats of arms probably have no particular heraldic meaning, except as an art form, and are only reminiscent of genuine heraldic symbology from the Middle Ages, and from which the artisan borrowed and modified freely. Each story has approx. twelve of them, each distinct from the other in color, design, symbols, and sometimes outward shape. I intend to upload all of the approximately fifty-six heraldic coats of arms in Apple QuickTime format soon. My walk down the case and through the hall had me end up at a door that has a peculiar spiderweb-style anti-burglary grate over the circular glass window; and the door leads back to the Main St. Promenade; that's where I stopped filming my descent that began at a pedestrian roof.
